Unfollowing on LinkedIn people who post inflammatory comments

I have decided to unfollow on LinkedIn people who post inflammatory comments.

The reason for this is simple. I have realized that people who look for emotional confrontation are not seeking the truth. They enjoy the drama of arguing, and of “being right”. I don’t have anything to learn from these type of people.

See I believe in facts for the most part. I believe in research, logic and things that you can prove. If we can’t prove it, then it might be just a bias or a belief that has no basis in reality. I do not think we can reduce all our experiences to proven things, but I think as a society we have to start with what we have in common.

What I see in this political climate is people saying and doing things that they have no evidence for. They say things that are made up, and their reasoning can’t be called reasoning at all. A famous quote goes “most people think they are thinking when they are simply rearranging their prejudices.” (William James a philosopher) I think a great deal of peoples thoughts are about how to feel comfortable with information, not in how that information can help others.

It is one thing for people to gather information for themselves. People are free to believe whatever they want. It is quite another for people to use that information in a distorted way. When people cling to things that are lies and factually provable as lies, then the conversation is over. You can’t reason with people who reject reality.

For that reason, I will not engage someone in discussion in life who can’t recognize what a fact is. A fact is something that is true no matter if we believe in it or not. We can’t deny its truth, anymore than we can ignore a lie. Facts do matter, even when people act as they don’t.
