Interesting TV show called Limitless
I’ve been watching an interesting TV show called Limitless. It has a realistic view of technology.
I like the show because it has the idea of someone getting smarter by taking a pill called NZT. This pill not only makes him smarter but also better memory, reaction and ability to sense. It really would be an upgrade for anyone.
It is interesting isn’t it that as a society we have a show that celebrates being smart as a weapon? Is this what we value as a society? Do we think that our intelligence is something that will create a better society?
Intelligence seems like it is the solution to problems doesn’t it? You just understand something and then the problem is fixed right? Yet we know as a society about consequences and results, and yet we continue to act in ways that show the opposite of intelligence.
For example, we know that science says that global warming causes sea level rise. Yet we have people in positions of power who are not acting on that but on the opposite of that. Rather than avoid fossil fuels and carbon emissions, they want to increase carbon emissions and avoid progress in eliminating carbon.
So how can we as a society say we value education and intelligence, and yet act in such stupid ways? I think the problem is not that we don’t understand the problem, but that we don’t have the emotional maturity to act on the difficult work to solve the problem.
So taking global warming for example we don’t want to buy efficient cars because we feel an SUV is easier. We don’t want to reduce our electricity consumption because we feel we need big homes and expensive things to be happy. Rather than look at what science says makes people happy we stubbornly cling to our ideas that happiness is in material things.
Its ok if you think that an SUV will make you happier. I’m not going to tell you not to buy one. Buy one, and when you aren’t happier maybe you will make a different decision the next time.
I don’t think intelligence is the answer, I think wisdom is the answer.
- Learning what makes you happy
- Everyone online is a critic
- Don’t take rejection personally
- Are we drama junkies?
- Don’t be the dumbest person in the room
