I read this book because I kept hearing positive things about it from other people. It has been a few days since I have read it and honestly I am still as confused as before.

Book Review: The China StudyIt has a ton of statistics and facts which are good, but I don’t agree with some of the conclusions. For example, he says that the rate of cancer in China is lower when more plants are eaten. However people who eat plants in China have stomach cancer. So it doesn’t seem like it is a full picture of health.

However since I read this I must admit that it has affected my own diet. I have eaten less protein and had a big salad and bought more fruits and vegetables. It is clear that the partly vegetarian people I know are some of the healthiest people I know. For example, one of my doctors was a vegetarian but has added chicken and some meat to her diet. I have seen first hand people who eat primarily protein based diets and it’s not a pretty picture.

I don’t know if you can get a perfect diet by reading one book, or even many books. I think this book however is an important step to give you a better sense of what a healthy diet could be. I also find it fascinating that some of the longest lived people live in Japan, and have a different diet than most western societies. I’m not sure I’m ready for sea vegetables, but sushi is great and who knows, maybe?
